The Common Core State Anchor Standards for Reading

Print Friendly

Standard 1

Rain pours from full sky,

everyone inside. Your feet

tell a mud story.

Standard 2

Thoughts grow roots, details

reach up first. Flowers unfold

plant’s main ideas.

Standard 3

Lines weave, create a

nest of meaning.  Pieces tell

whole: yarn, twig, hair.  Eggs.

Standard 4

Take note: words matter.

Careful choice shapes tone, meaning.

Is a rock a rock?

Standard 5

Veiny network shapes.

Red skin clings to skeleton.

Hidden frame makes leaf.

Standard 6

Rotten fruit tumbles,

pulp to ground, unimportant.

Who needs what we don’t?

Standard 7

Meaning, more than words

as reading storm, more than sky.

Read smells, wind, silence.

Standard 8

Hollow bough breaks, gives.

Solid branch stands wind, ice.  Strong

enough to live on.

Standard 9

Comparing houses:

Rooms, doors, windows, walls.  Lost your

tooth in that blue room.

Standard 10

Story explorers:

Scaling hills, mountains—alone

with ideas, knowledge.

Now that you have read our haiku interpretations of the reading achievement goals, we urge you to look at each verse alongside your copy of the standards.  Do we capture the essence of the goal?  Please let us know which ones work for you and which do not.

Tomorrow will conclude our weeklong celebration of poetry and the Common Core and we invite you back for the grand finale.  Stay tuned…
